The Eclipse!!

Hello dear friends,

Today I’d like to share some information about the upcoming solar eclipse. As many of you probably know the moon will pass completely in front of the sun this coming Monday. The time will largely depend on your location in the United States, as will the varying degrees. Where I live I will be able to view a 90% coverage. Now, what does that mean for pagans and witches?

In astrology, this has led many individuals to expect a major turning point for the United States as a whole. This is largely based on the date the United States itself was founded. While it’s not all doom and gloom, some people also predict some kind of natural disaster also taking place. So be aware, be smart, and be safe. Also research how this eclipse will effect your personal astrological sign.

On a much lighter note, there are a number of spells and other magical workings to perform during the eclipse. You can make eclipse water as detailed here for a store of positive energy and wisdom. If you have been wanting to work with faeries and are a more experienced witch you can initiate contact as detailed in this article. You can also do a meditation under the solar eclipse.

I will be at work during the eclipse, but my employer has permitted staff to ‘take a break’ and go outside to view this once in a lifetime event. So while I won’t be able to do any elaborate magical workings, I can still take deep breaths and pull in that wisdom and positive energy. I may also place some jars full of water on my back porch to use in future spellwork. Do what you see fit and enjoy the spectacle.

Love and light!

Let’s talk about Rocks, Baby!

Hello Dear Friends!

Today I would like to talk to you about rocks, also called stones, also called crystals. I’m sure you have heard of them. They come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colors, rough/raw, tumbled, etc. And these easy to find to fit any budget beauties each possess their own fascinating energies, which can help enhance your life, as well as your magick if you so choose to work with them!

I, myself, am becoming quite enthusiastic about crystals in a way I have never been before. So, I thought I would spread the love and talk briefly about some specific stones, and how to use them in everyday life.

So let’s get started! The stones I will talk about are more of a beginners guide, 101 list of stones that everyone should own:

AMETHYST: purple in color ranging from light lavender to dark almost black – This is a stone that will do just about everything! It’s a stone to enhance feelings of happiness & joy, heal pain (stomach, joint, even heartache), connect you to loved ones on the otherside, help with meditation, can be used to energize water to help your pets, etc. It’s a jack of all trades type stone. It’s fairly inexpensive, and found in almost any metaphysical shop. If you’re in the Cincinnati area, check out Enchanted Moments. I bought a nice palm sized piece of tumbled amethyst for my mom for about $5. She suffers from arthritis in her hands, and now uses the amethyst to help alleviate some of that pain. She’s a Catholic, but she believes the stone helps her!

BLUE LACE AGATE: when tumbled, this light blue stone will appear to have bands of various shades of blue and white running through it – This very gentle, calming stone is one to have if you have anxiety, trouble sleeping at night, or if you have pets that are high energy. The gentle energy of this stone works great under a pillow, or next to the bed at night to help calm the room and ease the inhabitants to sleep. Since I am a natural intuative, and medium – I have a hell of time falling asleep 😦 So I put together a sleeping sachel of stones, that includes Blue Lace Agate. I keep the sachel in my pillow case, and have had very few problems falling asleep since I started using the stones! This stone, when found, isn’t too expensive. Though it is not as readily available as amethyst.

CLEAR QUARTZ: when tumbled, it’s… well obviously clear hehe – This stone is a must have if you are just starting to work with stones… Why? Because like amethyst, clear quartz can be put to almost any task! Once you set your intention, and let your clear quartz know what job you want it to do (protection, help with meditation, etc.) it will go to work! Clear quartz is another inexpensive, readily available almost anywhere stone.

ROSE QUARTZ: pink in color, hence the name – This stone enhances love, especially self love. You know the phrase, you can’t love anyone until you love yourself? Well, this stone can help with that! And, if you are a libra like me, it is our alternative birthstone! While attending the Victory of Light Psychic Festival in April I bought a gorgeous raw chunk (I’m sure that’s not the technical term, but that’s what it is) about the size of my hand for less than $20 from The Crystal Guy. Fairly inexpensive, this stone is usally available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and finishes. I aslo own smaller tumbled pieces, and a pendant because, ya know, it’s my birthstone.

SELENITE: white and chalky in appearance – This stone is for cleansing that will not only cleanse you, but can helps cleanse your home, objects, and other crystals. It is one of the crystals of the angelic realm, and can be used to help connect you with your guardian angel. I keep a selenite tower in the middle of my house (yay open floor plan) to help draw down positive, white light energy, and keep my home free of negative energy. Though not too pricey, and pretty easy to find – selenite can be pricier depending on the piece.

Lastly, I would like to talk about black stones – obsidian, tormaline, hematite, etc. Stones that are black in appearance are considered protection stones. They will help banish negative energy from you, your home, and your life if you so choose to work with them. I keep a chunk of raw black tormaline next to my selenite tower, so while the tower is drawing down positive energy, the tormaline is dispelling negative energy. Note: If you want to banish negative energy from around your person, carry a piece of black stone in your left pocket. The left side is where we receive energy, the right side is where we send energy out. Black obsidian is fairly easy to find, and not too expensive. Tormaline I had a little more trouble finding the right piece for me… But I was looking for something very specific.

When it comes to working with stones, there are a number of different ways to do so… Carrying some stones in your pocket, wearing a specific stone as a pendant, creating a crystal grid, meditating with a specific stone, keeping a stone in your car for protection, etc. There really is no wrong way to work with stones, as a long as your intention is clear and you treat them with respect. Don’t forget that stones are living things too. And they need to be cleaned regularly to continue to work as intended. One good rule of thumb, is if the name of the stone ends in “ite” – malacite, flourite, kyanite, etc. do NOT put it in water. Water can be very harmful to some crystals. Some easy ways to keep your stones clean are to put them in a bowl of dried sage, smudge them with burning sage or candle smoke, or blow on them while picturing white light coming off of your breath.

Once cleaned, to charge your stones, place them under the full moon either outside or in the window sill. Even on a cloudy night, the moons power will reach the stones. While you can do the same thing with sunlight… Some stones, like Rose Quartz, are extremely sensitive to the sun which can alter their appearance.

So there you have it – for more information on any of the stones I mentioned, plus hundreds more… Check out the Crystal Bible series by Judy Hall. At the moment, it looks like Amazon has all three books available. Maybe I should break down and buy a copy already instead of constantly asking SidheSidhe to borrow hers! Meh… someday 😉

Store Review! WitchHaven Apothecary (Owensboro, KY)

Hello Dear Friends!

Today, SidheSidhe and I decided to hop on our brooms and take a little trip! We left the greater Cincinnati area, and traveled a few hours south to Owensboro, KY, to the home of Dani Millay and WitchHaven Apothecary.

We zoomed past many a sunflower field, corn field, forest, and farm to get there… And we even had to call to make sure we were in the right place 🙂 Yay adventures!

Dani runs her incredible shop out of the front room of her home. When we arrived at our destination, all we saw was a nice looking home, out in the country, with “No Trespassing” signs posted at the end of a long gravel drive way. Not wanting to be shot on sight, SidheSidhe called the number listed on Google, and a pleasant voice answered assuring us we were in the right place.

Parking is off to the right of the driveway. We walked up onto the porch, and through a set of french doors on the front of the home. The shop is small, but very inviting – nice smells fill the air, and everything is laid out neatly on shelves around the exterior walls. The owner and proprietor, Dani, warmly greeted us, and chatted right along as we made our way around to look at all the things!

Though the “brick and mortar” shop itself is fairly new – (just opened in early June of this year! ), the online shop has been around for some time and continues to operate at the link above.

WitchHaven Apothecary is a herbal remedy shop, and metaphysical store all rolled into one! From dried herbs and oil blends, to signature serums and sprays, with books, cards, and crystals rolled in – if they don’t have exactly what you are looking for… Let Dani know! She told us that one of her customers was looking for a very specific athame, which was finally located through a craftsman in Germany! It took 7 weeks to arrive at the store, and the customer was supposed to drop by later today to look it over. It was beautiful!

As shops go, this one is quite small. However, it is VERY new, and will only get bigger and better!

I myself am very excited about my purchases – WHA Insect Repellent & loose white sage. As soon as I got home, I put some of the sage to work cleansing my crystals before I charge them under the up coming full moon 🙂 After I post this entry, I will be testing the insect repellent while I take my dog for his bedtime walk!

Normally, I am apprehensive to try products like the insect repellent… But Dani’s sincerity when she spoke about how this product came to be, how it’s been tried and tested by more than just her family, and how she stands by the quality of her blends – really gave me hope that I might have found the answer to my “stop biting me deer flies” prayers! I will report back after next weekend’s camping adventures where I really put this spray to the test!

Overall I give this shop a thumbs up! It’s easy to see how much pride, and love has gone into making this store a reality, and how much Dani cares about providing the best for her customers. I may not make it back to Owensboro any time soon… But I will definitely be keeping an eye on the WitchHaven Apothecary’s progress! If you happen to find yourself in the Owensboro area – check it out! If not, check out the online shop and give the store a like on Facebook.

Significance of Dragonflies

Hello hello!!

Previously I wrote a post that discussed repetition, in which I mentioned that I receive signs when different circumstances, numbers, etc. repeat. Well, this week I have seen multiple dragonflies. If this was a normal occurrence, like the rate at which I see squirrels (numerous times daily) I wouldn’t have thought anything of it. But I can’t remember the last time I saw one dragonfly, much less multiple within the span of a week and across three state lines. So, without further ado, here is what I should take away from this experience.

According to Ted Andrews, author of Animal Speak and genius in my humble opinion the dragonfly/damselfly inhabit two elemental realms, the water and the air. This combination leads them to be masters of light, which you can see based on many of their glimmering patterns. As an astrological sign that is tied to the element water this insect is doubly interesting, as I know most animals/insects connected to water signify change, which Mr. Andrews and numerous other references corroborate. The idea of self-realization and a change in perspective in addition or in lieu of any large scale changes in career, or love, or other relationships may take place.

As a water sign, I take pride in accepting and basking in change. Though I will say the changes I know that are approaching are making this scorpion more timid. This week I have been informed that my boss, whom I work side-by-side, will be leaving next year. I spend more time with my boss than I do my spouse, so this is disconcerting at the least. I also have been having serious conversations with my husband regarding whether or not we should attempt having children. Not to mention how much I would love to have a career where I could write or create something anything!! for a living instead of working the typical nine to five. So while I do embrace change, change can be scary. I feel that the dragonfly is reminding me that while change can be intimidating, it can also be beautiful and awe-inspiring.

Regardless, check out Ted Andrews book for a much better explanation of why the dragonfly symbolizes change and is tied with water, air, and light. He is a much better wordsmith than I and paints the dragonfly beautifully.

Much love and all the light,
